Jerry with various versions of the famed Southern Heavyweight Championship. It actually began as the NWA Southern Jr. Heavyweight belt way back in the late 30s, then it was just the NWA Southern title, and then later switched to the AWA Southern belt. Jerry was Southern champ 52 times according to Wikipedia. The thing to remember is, even in the territories, rapid belt changes were much more common than we tend to think. Lawler routinely dropped the belt to his fellow rivals like "Superstar" Bill Dundee, but very common was his feuds with territorial journeymen, who'd come from the outside and challenge the King, while trying to insult the Memphis fans and its territory. There was no disputing, kayfabe or no, who the King was in Memphis. The Southern championship actually lives on as part of the Memphis Wrestling promotion, and Brian Christopher Lawler is a 26 time, and current, champion. A Lawler holding court in Memphis. It just makes sense.

I know I look like I'm being premature, but even if King pulls through, this part of his legacy is a must-know for any wrestling fan, and it's been horribly overshadowed by his recent WWE tenure. He's been the puppies guy for so long, that most don't know he is in fact a noted ring general and booker.

He's been the puppies guy for so long, that most don't know he is in fact a noted ring general and booker. It's also a reminder of just how out of touch Vince is. He keeps trotting out guys who are well past their prime and really not in any condition to be in the ring. I hope King is OK, but eventually something bad was going to happen with one of these guys, and it's not even necessary.

Next week will probably be RAW IS KING if he doesn't make it.
They better show the Kiss My Foot match in its entirety.
And regarding my Bret Hart fandom, in house shows the King and Bret were known to do 60 minutes with each other, night after night. And when they showed up to Memphis, you bet your ass there was some major blading in those ones.
