Because this system only counts the replies, and technically the first post isn't a "reply" it's the thread header.
Now considering the system we have been used to all this doesn't function the same way and the first post is always just the first post, I think we should adapt to those rules by doing reply# +1. That is just my opinion however, Cheesus is head BIC up in this piece yo. ;-)
