Ring of Honor was at Turner Hall last night. Turner Hall was home to the Milwaukee Turners, a German gymnastics group. There's a really good restaurant on the main floor and the hall is up a couple of flights of stairs. Old building, built in the 1880's. There's a stage on the end opposite the main entrance and an "L" shaped balcony that takes up half the room. The hall holds between 700-900 for stage acts. I'd estimate the crowd between 5-600. Main floor was packed. Every seat was taken. There was a gimmick table offering the usual fares of shirts, DVD's, etc. and another with some of the guys selling their gimmicks and signing shit. Matt Hardy was one of them.
They had a curtain on the stage and a ramp that led to the floor at ringside with the common style barricades around the ringside area with metal ROH signs affixed to them. There was a camera crew as well shooting the event.
Show started promptly at 7:30 as advertised with custom music. Weird thing here is that there is no visible ring announcer. I don't know if this is something they always do. The disembodied voice welcomes us and the first match is brought out.
1.) ROH TV Champ Adam Cole vs. Silas Young (non-title)
Good, fast paced opener. Young is local, BTW, and is the heel. Crowd is waaay hot. Cole wins.
2.) Bobby Fish vs. Tadarius Thomas
Nothing stood out to me on this, but it was decent. Truth Martini Comes out halfway through for whatever reason.
3.) "The Outlaw" Charlie Haas vs. Rhett Titus
Haas comes out with a case of Milwaukee's Best, which is over with the crowd as he does a Sandman-ish intro. He gets on the mic and proceeds to shit on Milwaukee and the crowd. Starts out hot and quickly goes to the outside. Fun match with Titus going over. I thought this would be the match before intermission with all the spilled beer, but the crew came out with paper towels and we had...
4.) Scum (Steve Carino & Jimmy Jacobs) with Rhino vs. The Briscoes and Jay Lethal. Corino gets on the mic and runs down Milwaukee, mentioning that it's been 12 1/2 years since he's been here and 12 1/2 years since he was last in the ring with Rhino. An ECW chant breaks out, Corino shitting on the crowd. Once the babies came in all hell broke loose. Another fun match. Lethal did a nice elbow off the top. Finish had Rhino hitting one of the Briscoes with the Gore.
Intermission.
5.) Matt Hardy vs. B.J. Whitmer. Matt gets on the stick and bitches about how he should have a shot at the TV Title. Started off slowish, finish was Matt had Whitmer in a submission and Rhett Titus comes out and throws in the towel.
6.) Davey Richards vs. Kyle O'Rielly. Good, well paced match with a lot of really well done false finishes. Richards finally gets the win.
7.) Defy or Deny 4-way Elimination Match, if a non-champion wins he gets a future title shot: Eddie Edwards vs. Michael Elgin vs. Roderick Strong vs. Kevin Steen. Elgin and Steen are huge. Non stop action. Of course there were the spots where a guy or 2 are out selling, etc. Most impressive spot of the match was a vertical suplex where Elgin had Strong (I think) up for about a minute. Order of elimination was Elgin, Strong, and finally Edwards. Steen is a beast. Elgin had some cool power spots. Edwards and Strong bumped like motherfuckers.
Fun show. The guys worked their asses off. Nothing blew my mind but on the other hand there wasn't anything that made me want to gig my scrotum. I'd go again, and would suggest them.
Random observations:
- Half of the balcony was roped off for the ROH light and sound crew and possibly restrooms for the boys. I was standing right by this area. Wrestlers were walking around freely throughout the show up there.
- $20 to park. Fuck you.
- There were plenty of local wrestling folks there. ODB was in attendance as well. She was most likely there with Dave Herro, a local promoter who uses a lot of TNA and former WWE talent on his shows.
- They rented the ring from Brew City Wrestling.
