Every serial program has it. Lock 2 characters in a shitty angle, give the staff some time off and your audience suffers through a clip show.
Is this recent run of really bad programming an extended version of the trope, or the new business model?

Yeah, I think you nailed it. However, in this case it's lock two characters into a crappy angle, Vince slices the continuity out of the script 5 minutes before curtain and the audience suffers through a shit sandwich with extra crap on it.

Not every trapped in the basement episode is crap.
For example, the All in the Family "trapped in the basement" episode wasn't a clipshow, but a character building episode that saw some understanding in the relationship between Archie and Meathead.
But, WWE ain't Norman Lear or his staff of writers.

I unfortunately have been afflicted with understanding tropes, and marketing ploys. I worked in radio and had a change to go beyond the fourth wall of EVERYTHING. I stopped being a mark and became a smark.
My favorite band has released a new song and I could care less, since it sucks.
I saw some kewl shit and was part of an awesome time in history. I'm blessed with an awesome woman and an okay life so far.
