My guess is he still gets a lot of lurker traffic, because user traffic has died down in quantity and quality in the near 10 years I had been going there. It was very noticeable the last few years.In the past year pageviews are down 10%+ and minutes per user are up, meaning unique viewers almost has to be down more than that 10% just for the math to work. But we don't know anything.

I still have no clue what lead to my last ban. The message said, "trolling," but as I said many times, I've trolled before, and that day, I was not trolling. It lent itself to your theory that mods and users often team up and collude, and if someone feels like they're being picked on, they'll send a message to their mod friend about it. Then that mod will issue the ban, because your screenname isn't Weaver95, cman or whoever.
